Catherine (28) met EGSA Adviser Roisin Linden at an event organised by RNID. Catherine was keen to develop her skills and get a job. She was interested in improving her English and maths, as she had left school without these qualifications.
Roisin advised her that enrolling in Essential Skills literacy and numeracy classes would help her develop these skills and gain employment. Catherine was concerned about getting the right communication support in class as she is hard of hearing. Roisin put her in contact with the learning support co-ordinator in her local college, who met with her and arranged the support she needed.
Catherine was also interested in volunteering to help boost her skills for work. Using links built up through the Healthier Lives Project, Roisin introduced Catherine to the Growing Connections farm in Bangor. Catherine decided to work as a voluntary host and administrator for 10 hours a week and plans to attend team leadership training in the future. She is really enjoying her work there and even adopted a hen at the farm.
Catherine says:
I’m doing really well with English. Got my initial results back… which I’m well pleased with. I’m loving work at the farm.
Before I heard of your service I didn’t know what to do and now I’ve heard of EGSA I think it’s fantastic. I would definitely recommend you to anyone I know.
