Surfing the W@ve of Social Media

Last week the Newsletter Online posted an article which was very relevant to one of our projects.  Their piece, ‘Silver surfers face up to social networking’, outlined that many older people are now embracing social networking sites, such as Facebook, to stay in touch with friends and family.

Social networking sites were not just for their grandchildren – indeed; with the rise of the ‘silver surfer’ in recent years, signing up to Twitter, Facebook and all the rest was simply the next step for older armchair laptop users. (Newsletter, 7 February 2012)

This move towards greater social engagement online is at the heart of our partner project: W@ve 2.0.  Its key objective is to reduce the feeling of social isolation and exclusion experienced by many senior citizens.

However, the project’s scope goes beyond social networking sites like Facebook. The project partners are striving to provide a more complete picture to this new wave of online social interaction by covering the wider benefits that can further enrich lives.

To achieve this we are developing a tailored training roadmap and resources that will meet the needs of senior citizens and which be available for all to use.
