We recently delivered three plain English training sessions to a total of 38 Voice of Young People in Care (VOYPIC) staff at their Belfast office. Another session is planned for their sessional workers later in the year.

VOYPIC is an independent, Northern Ireland based charity that empowers children and young people with an experience of care to participate in the decisions affecting their lives. Find out more about their work on VOYPIC’s website.

Keep It Clear training in VOYPIC

Keep It Clear is EGSA’s half day plain English training course.  It aims to help participants:

  • make their organisation’s written material clear, consistent and easy to understand
  • get the right message across to a wide range of audiences
  • apply plain English principles to their written communication

The training involves a mixture of practical exercises, group work, real life examples and the opportunity to share ideas and issues. We offer training to individuals at our open house sessions in Belfast and to groups of staff in an organisation’s own premises.

Tailored Training

We worked with Eithne Gilligan, VOYPIC Policy Manager, to tailor Keep It Clear to suit VOYPIC’s needs and enable their staff to get the most from the training.  Exercises included:

  • tone and style
  • how to assess suitability of materials
  • punctuation and grammar
  • benefits of plain English to VOYPIC and their clients

The sessions were well received and participants enjoyed the interactive, hands on approach. Almost all staff attended, including Chief Executive Vivian McConvey, which demonstrates VOYPIC’s commitment to producing clear, concise and effective information.

Very useful and will benefit VOYPIC as an organisation.

Jenny, Participation Development Worker
